The Huns were a nomadic Asian tribe who were considered to be one of the greatest nemeses of the Ancient Roman Empire.

Their leader?

Attila the Hun.

If you were living in the early 5th century, the name Attila the Hun was one that would send a spike of fear through your heart.

Attila was irrefutably one tough dude, to say the least. He called himself the “flagellum Dei”, or the Scourge of God; and many of his followers believed him to be the manifestation of the Devil on Earth. He was renowned far and wide for his brutality, and tendency to leave no survivors in the lands he conquered.

Some of his pastimes included the annihilation of any and all villages in his vicinity, raping women, sending massive armies to attack the Roman Empire, and just women in general. Attila had quite a few children with his first five wives, but things just didn’t work out.

Eventually, Attila found the perfect woman for him. Her name was Ildico, and within several days, they were celebrating their marriage. On the night of their wedding, Attila consumed an astonishing amount of food and drink. Afterwards, he took Ildico to bed to consume what was perhaps his favorite treat of all- (censored).

At one point during Attila’s and Ildico’s night antics, Attila got a nosebleed. It wasn’t significant enough for Attila to stop, though, so he kept perspiring away at Ildico, occasionally wiping blood off of his face. Eventually the two lovebirds fell asleep, marking the end of their first- and last- night together.

When Ildico awoke in the morning, she found her husband beside her, dead. There was no knife jutting out of his chest and he didn’t appear to have been injured- except for some dried blood running out of his nose.

Attila had choked on his blood in the middle of the night.

One of the most feared and respected military leaders of all time had been conquered by a simple nosebleed.
