• 1998, A school shooting in Jonesboro, Arkansas, kills five.

Mitchell Johnson, 13, and Andrew Golden, 11, shoot their classmates and teachers in Jonesboro, Arkansas on March 24, 1998. Golden, the younger of the two boys, asked to be excused from his class, pulled a fire alarm and then ran to join Johnson in a wooded area 100 yards away from the school’s gym. As the students streamed out of the building, Johnson and Golden opened fire and killed four students and a teacher. Ten other children were wounded.

The two boys were caught soon afterward. In their possession were thirteen fully loaded firearms, including three semi-automatic rifles, and 200 rounds of ammunition. Their stolen van had a stockpile of supplies as well as a crossbow and several hunting knives. All of the weapons were taken from the Golden family’s personal arsenal. Both of the boys had been raised around guns. Andrew Golden belonged to a local gun club and sometimes competed in shooting contests.

Because Johnson and Golden were thirteen and eleven, they could not be charged as adults in Arkansas. They were both adjudicated as delinquent and sent to reform institutes. They were to be released when they turned 18, as they could legally no longer be housed with minors, but Arkansas bought a facility in 1999 that enabled the state to keep the boys in custody until their 21st birthdays. Johnson was freed in 2005, but later returned to prison for other charges; Golden was released in 2007 and died in 2019. Arkansas changed its laws following the Jonesboro tragedy so that child murderers can be imprisoned past age 21.

  • The gift that kept Marshall’s legend alive.

The following is a story how the Barking Dog Alarm was utilized.

Jake felt more than sad when Marshall passed away. He felt worried.

Marshall was Jake's loyal German Shepherd. For twelve years, he guarded Jake's sporting goods store from would-be thieves and neighborhood troublemakers. Even as the neighborhood got a little more unsafe, Marshall kept the peace.

Jake's store was the only one on the block without any graffiti. Nobody, it seemed, wanted a run in with a big, angry guard dog.

Few people knew that Marshall was really a sweetheart, lavishing Jake with kisses every time he'd open the store in the morning.

Jake's daughter, Melissa, kept the store's books, and paid a visit to her father every Thursday. She knew the old man couldn't afford to install a state of the art security system. But she also knew that he was a little too fragile to try and train another big dog.

She brought her father a gift on her next visit. "This," she announced proudly, "will keep Marshall's legend alive in the neighborhood."

She explained to Jake that the Barking Dog Alarm used infrared sensors to watch the store at night, just like Marshall did. When intruders showed up at either the front or the back doors, the Alarm would bark. And it would bark louder and louder until the disturbance went away.

That Saturday night, two teenage boys strolled up the sidewalk. The midnight streetlight stretched their shadows halfway up the block. They banged and pulled on security gates as they talked about the trouble they could cause.

"Didn't old man Benson's dog just die?" asked the tall one.

"I think I heard Billy say something like that," replied the short one, "I could sure use some new sneakers!"

They hustled up to the front window, but before they could even try to break in, they heard loud barking from inside the store. And it was getting louder.

"Yo, I thought you said that dog was dead," cried the short hooligan.

"He must have got a new one," said his partner in crime, "I ain't messin' with no dog!"

The two juveniles hustled away around the corner as fast as their legs could carry them.

Marshall's legacy remains intact. He's still a presence in Benson's Sporting Goods, with a picture above the cash register - and the loud bark from the Barking Dog Alarm.

  • Perfect Neighborhood Watch Weapon.

Charles was a member of the neighborhood watch in Tinley Park, Illinois. For 15 years, he never encountered any real danger. Most people considered the place quiet and boring. Despite this, he made it a point to be prepared always.

He did not carry a gun since watch members were not licensed the same way guards and police officers are, but he could bring a baton and a TASER. His TASER X26P is a powerful weapon, one he never had to use before.

One night, his preparedness was rewarded. Just as he was about to head back to the office and call it a night, he heard a scream a few blocks south. Charles ran and found a teenage girl surrounded by two boys who seemed to be attempting to mug and rape her. Both had a knife, and the girl was leaning helplessly against the side of a parked car.

Charles acted quickly. He raised his weapon and aimed its laser sight at the man closest to him. Once he squeezed the trigger, the TASER X26P launched its cartridge for a good ten feet and caught the attacker right in the chest.

The man was shocked immediately. He collapsed to the ground.

If Charles understood correctly, electric currents would blow the man’s nervous systems ajar and he would lose all muscle control for several minutes. He did remain paralyzed on the ground, but Charles could not loosen up just yet because the second man was charging right at him.

Charles snapped the cartridge wires off the TASER X26P and ducked right in time to avoid the incoming punch. As this other man swerved past him, Charles rammed the TASER’s end to his ribs and squeezed the trigger again, sending high-voltage currents through his body.

With both attackers down, Charles grabbed his walkie-talkie and called for help. As he waited for the police and ambulance to arrive, he stayed by the girl’s side, comforting her and making sure she was not hurt.
