1987 Torture chamber uncovered in Philadelphia. Responding to a 911 call, police raid the Philadelphia home of Gary Heidnik and find an appalling crime scene. In the basement of Heidnik’s dilapidated house is a veritable torture chamber where three naked women were found chained to a sewer pipe. A fourth woman, Josefina Rivera, had escaped and called police. Gary Heidnik was a former mental patient and sex offender who had managed to become a wealthy stock investor. He owned a Rolls Royce and beat Uncle Sam on his income taxes by making himself the bishop of his own church. The sign on the front of his house read, “United Church of the Ministries of God.” One room in his house was partially wallpapered with money. At the end of 1986, Heidnik decided to create his own harem and began kidnapping women off the streets of Philadelphia. Six women were kidnapped and held in Heidnik’s dungeon. All were raped and tortured while the others were forced to watch. He killed one of the women by putting her in a pit, filling it with water and putting a live electrical wire into the water. Another of the women was killed when Heidnik let her starve to death while chained to the wall. In perhaps the most grisly and horrid episode of the entire incident, Heidnik dismembered one of his victims, cooking parts of her body and feeding it to his other captives. The women who were found alive recovered after being treated for dehydration and malnutrition. Although Heidnik was clearly mentally disturbed, he was found guilty and convicted of murder on July 1, 1988. He received a death sentence, and was executed on July 6, 1999. The gift that kept Marshall’s legend alive. The following is a story how the Barking Dog Alarm was utilized. Jake felt more than sad when Marshall passed away. He felt worried. Marshall was Jake's loyal German Shepherd. For twelve years, he guarded Jake's sporting goods store from would-be thieves and neighborhood troublemakers. Even as the neighborhood got a little more unsafe, Marshall kept the peace. Jake's store was the only one on the block without any graffiti. Nobody, it seemed, wanted a run in with a big, angry guard dog. Few people knew that Marshall was really a sweetheart, lavishing Jake with kisses every time he'd open the store in the morning. Jake's daughter, Melissa, kept the store's books, and paid a visit to her father every Thursday. She knew the old man couldn't afford to install a state of the art security system. The pinhole camera that showed everything. "Another Saturday night," groaned Thomas. He mopped up a mess of spilled beer at the back of his convenience store. Some punk knocked it off the shelf, and then ran out the door without even apologizing. As he bent down to pick up the shards of broken glass, a heard what he could swear sounded like snakes hissing. They watched the thieves disable the parking lot camera, followed by the blacking out of the two inside lenses. But a 4th frame showed everything that happened that night, especially the unmasking of the robbers. "I don't get it," one of the cops said, craning his neck around the room. "They cased this place out and took out the cameras. How'd they miss that one?" Thomas grinned and pointed at the Electrical Box. A pinhole security camera peeked out at everyone in the room. "That sign does a lot more than show folks the way out of the store," Thomas said. "It shows criminals the way off the streets." Sure enough, Thomas captured crystal clear images of the thieves practically staring into the camera. Once those pictures hit the local news, the cops had them both in custody within a matter of hours. They hadn't even had time to spend the money. And they looked better with the masks on.
