  • Perfect Neighborhood Watch Weapon.

Charles was a member of the neighborhood watch in Tinley Park, Illinois. For 15 years, he never encountered any real danger. Most people considered the place quiet and boring. Despite this, he made it a point to be prepared always.

He did not carry a gun since watch members were not licensed the same way guards and police officers are, but he could bring a baton and a TASER. His TASER X26P is a powerful weapon, one he never had to use before.

One night, his preparedness was rewarded. Just as he was about to head back to the office and call it a night, he heard a scream a few blocks south. Charles ran and found a teenage girl surrounded by two boys who seemed to be attempting to mug and rape her. Both had a knife, and the girl was leaning helplessly against the side of a parked car.

Charles acted quickly. He raised his weapon and aimed its laser sight at the man closest to him. Once he squeezed the trigger, the TASER X26P launched its cartridge for a good ten feet and caught the attacker right in the chest.

The man was shocked immediately. He collapsed to the ground.

If Charles understood correctly, electric currents would blow the man’s nervous systems ajar and he would lose all muscle control for several minutes. He did remain paralyzed on the ground, but Charles could not loosen up just yet because the second man was charging right at him.

Charles snapped the cartridge wires off the TASER X26P and ducked right in time to avoid the incoming punch. As this other man swerved past him, Charles rammed the TASER’s end to his ribs and squeezed the trigger again, sending high-voltage currents through his body.

With both attackers down, Charles grabbed his walkie-talkie and called for help. As he waited for the police and ambulance to arrive, he stayed by the girl’s side, comforting her and making sure she was not hurt.

  • Being prepared for the unexpected

Christy waited tables at a hip little bistro a few blocks from her apartment. Though she loved her neighborhood, she always prepared for the unexpected.

One night, one of the diners got a little out of hand. She could put up with rude customers, and she could even tolerate patrons who had a little too much to drink.

She and her boss agreed that anyone who tried to lay hands on her or on any of the wait staff would end up enjoying the rest of their meal "to go."

So her boss ejected a customer who looked like a rumpled college professor after he tried to pinch Christy's bottom. The guy created a huge stink, but the customers applauded when he fell down the steps and landed on the sidewalk with a thud.

Later that night, after Christy banked out and counted her tip money, she headed back down the street to her place. She thought she heard footsteps behind her, but saw nobody when she swung around.

Another block away from the restaurant, she thought she heard a trash can rattle. Still, she couldn't see anyone in the shadows.

Only a few steps away from her building's front door, Christy heard someone sneeze. She whipped around to see the drunken customer from earlier that night.

He lunged at her, shouting, "I'll show you!"

Instead of bolting for the door - she wouldn't have made it in time, anyway - she pulled out her keys. Instead of a usual keychain, Christy carries a Key Chain Pepper Spray. It's small enough to fit in a purse, and durable enough to inflict pain on an attacker.

As the drunken patron grabbed for her hair, Christy ducked down and sprayed the attacker in the eyes. Wincing in pain, he buckled over and made another swipe at her. She retaliated by holding onto the spray and swinging her keys against his face.

Christy's attacker crouched on the sidewalk while she dialed 9-1-1 on her cell phone.

"Next time," Christy said, "stick to what's on the menu."

  • Word of the Day: Yare.

    ADJECTIVE
    1. (Of a ship) Responding promptly to the helm; easily manageable.

    Example Sentences.
    1. "Despite the ship's large size, it was surprisingly yare on sharp turns."
    2. "Nancy traded in her car for something less flashy but more yare."
    3. "The captain was relieved to find the ship yare, despite the choppy waves."

    Word Origin.
    Germanic, pre-12th century

This nautical term developed from the Middle English word "gearu," meaning "prepared, ready." It's also thought to be related to the Dutch word "gaar" ("done, dressed") and the German word "gar" ("ready"). Bigger ships are likely to be less yare than smaller ones, especially when it comes to emergency stops.
